At MDAC, the power of art is harnessed to communicate, heal, and inspire.

MDAC artists, who face unique challenges, are shining examples of resilience and creativity. One such artist is Leo Contreras, a non-verbal individual who has become a beloved and talented figure in the MDAC community.

Jessica Solomon, MDAC’s Manager of Arts and Leo’s art therapist, shares her admiration for his work. "Leo is one of our star artists who has been a staple at MDAC. He loves working on a large scale, and his mark-making is unique. He has a very intuitive style that just comes out as pure expression," Jessica explains. Leo's art is not only beautiful but also deeply personal, serving as his voice—a means to express himself in ways that words cannot.

"Despite the challenges our artists face, they create work that is profoundly expressive," Jessica adds. "Any chance they have to show the community what they’re all about gives them a voice and captures the essence of what we do here at MDAC."

For Leo, creating art brings joy, which radiates through his work. His art embodies happiness and positivity—a gift he shares with the world through his canvases. Jessica reflects, "He just emanates pure joy and happiness, and his gift to the world is what he does."

MDAC is proud to support Leo and all of our artists as they continue to break barriers, inspire others, and express themselves through art. Each piece serves as a reminder that art transcends words, offering a universal language that connects us all.
